Christy McCoy

Climbing the ladder

Christy McCoy
Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, Lone Star Capital Bank

Christy McCoy is chief financial officer and executive vice president of Lone Star Capital Bank, but she began where a lot of people start in banking, as a teller. Her talents were first identified by a branch manager from Bank of America who came through her checkout line at H-E-B. The manager was impressed with what she saw and asked McCoy if she would be interested in working as a teller at Bank of America.

McCoy was working toward her accounting degree, which she earned from The University of Texas at San Antonio in 1999, while she worked at the bank and H-E-B. She expected to pursue a career in accounting. When she interned at a firm, however, she didn’t enjoy it and knew she wouldn’t be able to travel much when she started her family since her husband had decided to join the San Antonio Fire Department.

Guided by faith and intuition, McCoy decided to stay in banking, where she has spent 25 years — 23 of them at Lone Star Capital Bank.

“Every day [at the bank] has been different and I enjoy working with customers and knowing I can make a difference for them and their businesses,” McCoy said.

She especially enjoys working at LSCB because it’s a community bank.

“I like that when I’m away from my family at home I am spending my day with people who are like family to me,” she said.

After just six months with the bank, an executive assistant position opened, and she asked for the opportunity to prove herself. She told her boss that if she didn’t cut it, they could always move her back to the teller line. But, she never moved back. After graduation, McCoy became the bank’s internal auditor, allowing her to expand her knowledge. McCoy’s certified bank auditor designation from BAI and graduating from SWGSB allowed her to continue to move up in the bank. Her determination to continue learning in every one of her positions has made her key to the bank’s success.

“I’m not afraid to try new things and figure it out as I go,” McCoy said. “I just have a natural inclination to learn. When I was in the lobby, if I saw the teller line needed help, I would do that. If the back office needed help, I would help there as well. I got a lot more exposure that way. And now I’m learning the lending side. At community banks you have to wear multiple hats.”

These days, she still enjoys making a difference in people’s lives, though her day-to-day has moved from working directly with customers to working with employees, the board and vendors.

While no two days look alike, McCoy enjoys the variety — from meeting with her teams to assisting the CEO with strategic planning, she’s able to do a variety of work as chief financial officer. Her role also includes overseeing the IT department, risk management, compliance, accounting and loan operations.

Since McCoy began her career, she’s seen a lot of changes — many in the form of technology.

“Now everything we do is tech-based,” she said.

Lone Star Capital Bank has kept up with technology mainly through strategic hires as well as partnering with CSI, which allows the bank to offer more products and services to its customers. She also attributes technology to improving the bank’s operational efficiency.

In addition to changing the way customers bank, technology has changed the way she works. McCoy used to have stacks of paper on her desk, but she’s now able to move a lot of that paper onto her computer. Her favorite tool she’s using right now is OneNote, a part of the Microsoft Suite that allows everything from notes, email and documents to be tied together.

“I’ve created a notebook for each of the areas I oversee so that everything is in one place for that department and nothing falls through the cracks,” McCoy said.

About the bank

LSCB is headquartered in San Antonio with seven branches — three in San Antonio and four throughout the Texas Hill Country in Blanco, Johnson City, Dripping Springs and Marble Falls. The bank was formed in 2003 as a merger between Clear Lake National Bank and Mission Bank. Both Mission Bank and Clear Lake National Bank were founded in 1999. In 2012, LSCB completed its acquisition of Cattleman’s National Bank, headquartered in Johnson City.

“At LSCB, we strive to take the bureaucracy out of the process to meet customers’ needs — we’re very relationship-driven,” McCoy said.

The bank also has a culture committee that plans monthly activities to bring the staff closer together.

Volunteering

Another aspect McCoy enjoys about working at a community bank is being able to serve in her community. Each year the bank participates in Light the Night walk, which raises money benefiting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s funding of research to find blood cancer cures. She enjoys volunteering with Light the Night — because she has had family members who have had blood cancer and because she appreciates what the organization is doing — as well as the Boerne Berges Fest, where she is able to spend time with her family while volunteering.

Additionally, she has volunteered for a number of years with Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, while her daughter and son were both in the scouts. She has also served on the board of Gemini Ink, a literary arts organization.

McCoy has been married to her husband, Clint, for 25 years and has a daughter, Shelby, who attends Texas A&M University as a biomedical engineering student, and son, Tyler, a freshman in high school who plays football and is into powerlifting.
