Department Issues Proclamation Authorizing Closures Due to Severe Winter Weather
Commissioner Charles G. Cooper issued a proclamation in response to the disaster declaration by Governor Greg Abbott of February 12, 2021, and the severe winter weather in Texas.
Pursuant to Section 37.002 of the Texas Finance Code, an office or operation may not remain closed for more than three consecutive days, excluding days on which the bank is customarily closed, without the banking commissioner's approval. Commissioner Cooper found that an emergency exists in areas of the state affected by the continued severe winter weather. He therefore authorized banks organized under the laws of the State of Texas, at their discretion, to close offices in affected areas until conditions improve and utilities and security can be restored to safely serve the financial service needs of their communities.
Banks that have determined to close branches or offices should notify the Texas Department of Banking at firstname.lastname@example.org.
