Trump removes Chopra as CFPB director
2/03/2025
President Donald Trump removed Rohit Chopra as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) director. Chopra has led the bureau since 2018 and strongly advocated for consumer protections, particularly in areas like medical debt reporting and overdraft penalties.
Trump’s dismissal aligns with Republican critiques of the CFPB’s regulatory reach. No permanent replacement has been named, but Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has been designated as acting director.
“I look forward to working with the CFPB to advance President Trump’s agenda to lower costs for the American people and accelerate economic growth,” said Secretary Bessent.
